K18HD-D (virtual and UHF digital channel 18) is a low-powered PBS-affiliated television station it licensed Bakersfield operates as a low-power translator of KVPT.

History

Background

The UHF channel 34 allocation in the Bakersfield market was originally licensed to KVPT-LP, which operated for a few months in 2006. The station was owned by Cocola Broadcasting (now KCBT-LD).

Early years

The station first signed on the air on October 18, 2005 as KVPT-LP; owned by Cocola Broadcasting. it was the second television station to sign on in the Bakersfield market, which debuted three months earlier on August 1. Channel 18 originally operated as a primary ABC affiliate with a PBS affiliation. KVPT-LP (channel 34, now KCBT-LD).

Sale to Valley Public Television

On September 27, 2009, Cocola Broadcasting announced that it would sell KVPT-LP. On February 17, 2009, KVPT-LP became K18HD-D, and moved to 18 virtual.
